Nigerians Battling Hunger, Insecurity and Hardship Under Tinubu, Says Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi, has said that Nigerians are enduring widespread hunger, insecurity, economic hardship and harassment under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Obi made the remarks on Friday while speaking with journalists at St. Fintan's Catholic Church in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where he attended the burial of the late Okaji Okorie, father of NDC's Ebonyi South senatorial candidate, Linus Okorie.

Commenting on allegations that supporters of the NDC are being harassed by members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Obi argued that the challenges facing Nigerians go beyond politics.

"Every Nigerian is already being harassed, not just my supporters," he said. "Hunger is harassing everyone. The worsening economic situation is affecting every household. Visit any community and you will see the suffering. It is time for Nigerians to tell those in government that enough is enough."

On the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct credible elections in 2027, Obi said the responsibility ultimately rests with the Nigerian people.

"It is not really about confidence in INEC; it is about confidence in the people. If Nigerians insist that their votes must count, then their votes will count," he stated.

He urged citizens to reflect on the country's future, asking whether Nigeria could continue on its current path.

"We must ask ourselves what kind of future we are leaving for our children. Are we going to continue in this direction? Anyone speaking about genuine change in Nigeria today is making a great sacrifice because we cannot continue like this," Obi said.

According to him, poverty and hunger continue to worsen across the country, leaving millions of Nigerians struggling to survive.

"Reports have shown that poverty is rising, but you do not need statistics to know what is happening. Go to the villages and see the suffering for yourself. Millions of Nigerians are going hungry. We must decide whether we want this situation to continue," he added.

Obi also paid tribute to Linus Okorie, describing him as a loyal political associate with whom he has shared a long-standing relationship.

"This is not the first time Hon. Linus Okorie and I have worked together. We were together in the Labour Party, and today we are in the NDC. That reflects the strength of our relationship," he said.

Offering condolences to the bereaved family, Obi prayed for the peaceful repose of the late Okaji Okorie and asked God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss.
